Schedule of Events
 July 1-July 8

Listed below is a schedule of events starting on July 1, 2005 - leading up to the Long Walk of Justice

July 1
(White Band Day)

On July 1,2005, we will see millions of people around the world as well as famous buildings and icons wearing white bands demanding that world leaders take the decisions that will put and end to poverty.

People across the globe are asked to show solidarity by wearing some sort of white band. The white band is the global symbol of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, of which Make Poverty History is a part.

The "official" white band is made of neoprene or cloth, but any type of material is acceptable.
Make sure you wear your white band on 1 July in support of Make Poverty History. People are being asked to wear a white band on the following days:

  • July 1st - just before the G8 meeting of world leaders
  • September 10th - just before the UN summit
  • December 10th - just before the World Trade Organization meeting in Hong Kong.

July 2*
(Make Poverty History Rally)

On this day, people are asked to gather in Edinburgh.

On this day, world leaders gather for the annual G8 summit in nearby Gleneagles to discuss trade and economic issues.

Hundreds of thousands of people from across the globe will make their way by land, sea and air to Edinburgh, to show the G8 leaders that they must act to stop the scandal of extreme poverty.

The Make Poverty History Rally is a series of scheduled marches beginning at The Meadows. The rally  will start in a park in Edinburgh and have two stages on which speakers, bands and films will be shown. Speeches will begin at 11 am and marches will begin at 12 pm, 1 pm and 2pm.

By mid afternoon,
the event organizers hope that there will be a complete human white band (made up of all the walkers wearing white T shirts) around Edinburgh castle and the centre of town.

A festival will be held in The Meadows with fair trade stalls, activities, food and drink and live music.
The event starts at 11am and finishes at 7pm.

July 3-6
(The Long Walk to Justice)

People from around the world will begin to arrive in Edinburgh on the 3rd to participate in the Long Walk to Justice. Events are planned for Monday and Tuesday in Edinburgh, including speeches, rallies and debates about debt, aid, trade justice and governance with perspectives from the national campaigns. GCAP currently has 50 representatives of the coalitions confirmed to come to Edinburgh for the Long Walk.

A media briefing for the GCAP Long Walkers will be held in the GCAP Centre in the morning of July 4.

The Long Walkers will all come together at an event in the Edinburgh rugby stadium (Murrayfield) on the evening of the 6th. The event will be the “send off” of the delegation to meet the G8 leaders on the evening of the 6th to present the people's petition to the leaders to end poverty. More on this
concert event here.

GCAP will be represented on the stage in Murrayfield and the event will include singers and well known speakers.

After the Murrayfield event, the event organizers are planning to launch a vigil on 7-8 July, waiting for the G8 decision.

The communiqué detailing the decisions of the G8 meeting should be published in the late evening of the 8th or the morning of the 9th. GCAP media people will be working on coordinating a response to this in Edinburgh.
