Chris De Burgh at Live 8
Chris de Burgh was born in Argentina on October
15, 1948. Chis spent his childhood in Zaire, Malta, and Nigeria before
his family finally moved to Ireland. It was on the Emerald Isle that his
parents converted a 12th century castle into a hotel, and in that setting
that Chris learned to play guitar and sing.
He studied at Trinity College, in Dublin, and earned a degree in English
and French. Upon graduation, he made a decision to try and sing for a
living. He did odd jobs and even worked at a hamburger restaurant and
a hair dresser's shop. In 1972 he headed for London to try to earn a better
living in music and after two rough years was able to land a recording
contract with A&M records.
His first real break came in the most unlikely places. In 1975 his debut
single titled Flying hit the charts in Brazil where it remained at No.
1 for 17 weeks.
Over the years, Chris has had three major hits in the UK and US: Don't
Pay the Ferry Man, Lady in Red, and Missing You. He is considered on the
hardest working performers with countless tours and over 3,000 concerts.
This is a remarkable number that is equivalent to one show every three-and-a-half
days since 1975.
