David Hallyday at Live 8
When little David Smet, a.k.a. Hallyday was born
on August 14th, 1966 in Boulogne-Billancourt near Paris, his parents were
already pop personalities. His father Johnny
Hallyday was a superstar.
There was of course a highly publicized wedding of Sylvie Vartan and Johnny
Hallyday in 1964, and 2 short years later the birth of their son was an
event that did not go unnoticed. His mother was quick to dedicate a song
to him with "Ballade pour un sourire".
Growing up in a musical family helped develop David Hallyday's diverse
taste in music. Early on he learned to play drums, guitar and the piano.
David also was able to accompany his superstar father on stage on more
than a number of occasions. At age 15 he came to live with his father
in the United States and became a true Californian teenager. His first
band; a group with five American friends called themselves the Weekenders.
Hallyday divided his time between the US, Normandy and Paris. In 1987,
with the help of his step-father Toni Scotti, he appeared in a musical
film titled He's my girl". He wrote his first two hits, "He's
My girl" and "Church of the Poison Spider" for this film.
David Hallyday's career then launched as he released his very first album
in 1988, "True Cool". This album sold 900,000 copies and produced
a hit in the track titled "High".
In 1990, Hallyday released "Rock 'n Heart. David's success was slightly
shadowed by the super success of his father. This album was released in
English and the French press was rarely interested in this son of a national
hero for his American style.
In 1991, Disney Paris asked him write the music for its inauguration.
In 1993, Hallyday took a chance for the first time to record a song in
French released only as a single titled Heroes. In 1994 he released the
album titled "Pain and Pride" with his group Blind Fish.
After Blind Fish, David Hallyday surrounded himself with a new group,
Novocaine, just for one album of the same name. He worked with among others
his partners from Blind Fish, Eric Godal and Bo Govino. The album was
recorded in April 1996 in Santa Monica and released in 1997 in the United
States only.
Recent releases have shown a rockier edge to David's work, but success
is now assured on both sides of the Atlantic.
