Faudel at Live 8
Faudel, born on June 6, 1978, is now considered the
Prince of raï music. (Raï [Arabic:] is a form of folk music,
originated in Oran, Algeria from Bedouin shepherds, mixed with Spanish,
French, African-American and Arabic musical forms, which dates back to
the 1930s and has been evolved by women mainly. The word "Raï"
is Arabic for "opinion".)
The French music scene has long been celebrated as a thriving centre for
world music - and perhaps the most exciting new development has been the
emergence of Algerian Rai stars. Faced with repression and death sentences
in their homeland, a number of top Algerian Rai stars have set up home
in Paris and launched successful international careers from France.
Faudel debut album, Baida, catapulted him to fame. He has also performed
with Khaled and Rachid Taha on the live album 1 2 3 Soleils. His other
albums include Samra and his latest album Un Autre Soleil (released Sept.
2003).
