Bob Geldof at Live 8
Bob Geldof (born Robert Frederick Zenon Geldof) was
born in Dublin, Ireland in October of 1954. Bob had a stint as a music
journalist in Canada before coming to fame in the mid 1970s as lead singer
to the Irish group The Boomtown Rats. They actually played their first
concert under the name The Nightlife Thugs before changing their name.
(The band got their name from a gang in Woody Guthrie's novel titled 'Bound
for Glory'.)
The "new wave/punk" band had a string of small time hits in
the UK and broke through to international popularity in 1979 with the
controversial single "I Don't Like Mondays."
The title of the song referred to a tragic event where 16-year-old Brenda
Ann Spencer opened fire on children arriving at Cleveland Elementary School
in San Diego, California. When asked what impelled her to do it, she replied
''I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day.''
In 1982 Bob Geldof appeared in Alan Parker's movie of Pink Floyd's titled
The Wall. Although the movie was a resounding success for Pink Floyd,
Bob Geldofs career didnt go too far.
In 1984 Bob Geldof turned activist. After viewing a horrific television
broadcast by Michael Burke about the famine in Africa, Geldof organized
40 British pop musicians (including Sting, Bono and Bob Geldof) to record
the song "Do They Know It's Christmas" under the name of Band
Aid.
Geldof's goal was to raise money for victims of starvation in Africa.
The song was a marvelous hit and led to the enormous twin charity concerts
known as Live Aid, held in London and Philadelphia on 13 July 1985.
In 1986 Bob Geldof was given an honorary knighthood and nominated for
the Nobel Peace Prize.
Now, thanks to the recent Live 8 events, Bob Geldof is quick becoming
known again. 20 years after his initial Live Aid event Bob Geldof with
the help of Midge Ure and Bono of U2 organized the most fantastic concert
events in history. The goal of these events was to raise awareness for
and pressure the G8 to make a positive decision in regards working with
Africa.
The events were a resounding success. Over 3 billion people heard or saw
the concerts that took place in London, Cornwall. South Africa, Versailles,
Johannesburg, Berlin, Tokyo, Barrie, Russian Federation and a final concert
event in Edinburgh.
