On
Saturday, July 2, 2005, ten fantastic concerts took place around the world
part of the campaign to Make Poverty History. Live 8 as it was dubbed
was designed with the intention to bring attention to the meeting in Scotland
of the G8.
One of these concerts organized by Peter Gabriel and held at the Eden
Project in Cornwall, South West England; was called Africa Calling Live
8. It was produced in association with WOMAD and Live 8 Eden featured
an exclusive lineup of some of Africa's finest musicians, performing in
the spectacular setting of Eden Project.
Eden Project is one of the UK's top Landmark Millennium projects. It was
created to tell the captivating story of man's correlation with plants.
The Eden Project is a non-profit charitable scientific organization. The
commitment and focus is to commune with the public through education,
entertainment, and involvement. The main draw are it's biodomes.
Those lucky enough to have won one of the 4,200 tickets up for grabs in
the Live 8 text message lottery enjoyed the acts emerging on the main
stage. Others favored to gather in the Warm Temperate Biome for the 'unplugged'
sessions. Some guests took the opportunity to explore Eden's grounds as
the music filled the air and carried within the cavernous pit that is
home to Eden huge greenhouses.
Spectacular performances from the African musicians and the crowd was
seen dancing and laughing and singing in the sunlight which broke through
an early mist over the former china clay pit. This wonderful event featured
18 acts from 14 countries including Dido, Youssou N'Dour, Peter Gabriel,
Angelique Kidjo, Ayub Ogada, Daara J, Maryam Mursal, Modou Diouf &
O Fogum, Salif Keita, Shikisha, Thomas Mapfumo & the Blacks Unified.
Angelina Jolie and her son Maddox attended the Live 8 Cornwall event.
