The Long Walk To Justice - July 6, 2005

The efforts to continue to raise awareness about Africa and debt relief culminated in a final concert in Scotland called The Long Walk to Justice.

Unlike the Live 8 shows being staged simultaneously on July 2 in London, Paris, Philadelphia, Berlin, Rome, Germany,
Moscow and South Africa; the Edinburgh concert was held July 6, 2005.

Edinburgh's concert event was delayed until to Wednesday July 6, to directly coincide with the G8 summit

To keep the
pressure on the World Leaders at the G8 Summit, a very special event at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium on Wednesday 6 July was be held. This event was the final in a series of 10 concert events, and included a march around the city of Edinburgh.

Famous model Claudia Schiffer and actor George Clooney were among the many celebrities on stage in between performances at Murrayfield Stadium. Spectators watched through the rain, as  Annie Lennox, Daniel Bedingfield, The Corrs, Embrace, McFly, Ronan Keating, Snow Patrol, The Proclaimers, The Thrills, Midge Ure, Wet Wet Wet, and One Giant Leap performed in a crowd of over 50,000.

Bono (singer of U2) introduced a recorded message from the former South African President Nelson Mandela. The message was played on a big screen for a damp but enthusiastic crowd.

"As long as poverty and injustice can cause inequality to persist in our world none of us can truly rest,'' Mandela said in the video.

Mandela urged the Group of Eight leaders: "Don't look the other way. Don't hesitate. Recognize that the world is hungry for action, not words. Act with courage.''
