Paul McCartney at Live 8
Taking the stage with Bono at the Live 8 concert was Paul McCartney. Kicking off the event with the title track from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band, Bono and Paul McCartney rocked Hyde Park.
Twenty years ago indeed. It was rumored that Paul McCartney would not be playing the Live 8 events unless he got to both open and close. It seems that the former Beatles star got his way. He began the world wide Live 8 concert on stage beside Bono (of U2) and closed the show with 5 of his most popular numbers. McCartney and Bono were joined on the stage by a horn section made up of four Beatles look-alikes dressed in colorful Sgt. Pepper's uniforms.
There was a thunderous roar from the crowd of over 200,000 as the two rock icons belted out the first line: "It was 20 years ago today..." -- a nod to Bob Geldof's huge Live Aid benefit that raised millions for African famine relief in 1985.
Thanks to Paul McCartney's participation in the London Live 8 concert on Saturday, Apple's iTunes Music Store has two Beatles songs performed by its co-composer available for downloading — "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "The Long and Winding Road."
Prior to live 8, only Beatles songs available for download are songs by Ringo Starr, "Yellow Submarine" and "With a Little Help From My Friends". These tracks are from his recent All-Starr Band records.
To date, no original recordings by the Beatles, or classic solo tracks by McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon, or even Starr himself, are available on iTunes, or available for downloading.
(There is one exception, a McCartney tune called "Whole Life". This track is part of a Nelson Mandela tribute album. It is listed incorrectly on iTunes as being performed by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics).
