Robbie Williams at Live 8
Robert Peter Williams was born in February 13, 1974.
(Robbie Williams often tells people that his middle name is Maximilian,
but he admitted that this is not true and in fact he just invented it
because he thought "it sounded good".)
Robbie Williams history began with the popular boy band Take That. The
band was formed in 1991 and proved to be quite successful. Unfortunately,
Robbie didn't get along too well with his band mates and in 1991; he left
the band (or was fired, depending on who you talk to).
When Take That broke up it was expected that other members of that band
would see far more success that they did. Robbie returned to the spotlight
in 1996 with a cover of George Michael's song "Freedom". After
a short stint in rehab he followed up with a single titled "Old Before
I Die".
Both tracks were thought to be sucessfull after reaching number 2 in the
UK charts. Shortly afterward, he released his first solo album, Life Thru
A Lens.
Life Thru A Lens included both of his earlier singles , but the rest of
the album was considered to be a bit of a disappointment. In December
of 1997, he released the last song of this album titled Angels. Angels
is considered to be his best song to date.
His second album "I've Been Expecting You" topped the UK charts
ni October of 1998.
In the summer of 2000, Robbie came back in a big way with the smash hit
third album titled Swing When You're Winning. Williams' global success
was solidified in 2001 after a duet cover version of the Frank Sinatra
duet song "Something Stupid". Nicole Kidman provided her duet
talet to this remake. The album also included Rat pack standards like
Mr. Bojangles, Mack the Knife, Straighten Up and Fly Right, and Beyond
the Sea.
2002 saw the relase of Escapology. This album included a hit track titled
"Feel". The stylish video for this song included an appearance
by actres Darryl Hannah.
To further add to his ego, UK public voted Williams to be on the BBC's
list of the 100 Greatest Britons.
Robbie took the stage at Live 8 this July 2, 2005 and his strong stage
presence and performace has people saying that he was one of the best
performers at the event.
Robbie opened his portion of the Live 8 show-stealing set with a salute
to another flamboyant showman Freddie Mercury. He did a version of the
Queen anthem, We Will Rock You.
Robbie followed this track with Let Me Entertain You in which Robbie had
the whole crowd jumping up and down with joy.
He did two other numbers and finished by introducing his song Angels saying:
"Get out your prayer mats and hymn books."
