Scissor Sisters at Live 8
The Scissor Sisters was formed in 2001 by lead vocalist
Jake Shears. The controversial five-piece band was inspired by glam rock,
drag queens, and burlesque. The full name of their band was actually called
the Dead Lesbian and the Fibrillating Scissor Sisters. (Scissor Sister
is a slang term that refers to a lesbian sex position.)
Their first single titled Laura had a limited release in 2003, but still
managed to reach #54 in the UK singles charts.
The group actually made their mark in late 2003, early 2004 with their
cover version of the Pink Floyd song Comfortably
Numb. It was the B-side to their single Electrobix.
The band includes founder Jake Shears (born Jason Sellards, lead vocals),
Ana Matronic (born Ana Lynch, vocals), Del Marquis (born Derek Gruen,
guitar), Babydaddy (born Scott Hoffman, bass guitarist), and Paddy Boom
(born Patrick Secord, drums).
The lyrics of their songs, mainly written by Jake Shears and Babydaddy,
are known for their mixture of humor and calamity. They are known for,
incorporating elements of burlesque and drag shows, as well as performance
art, into their theatrical live shows.
They have been in and out of the charts with hits like "Take Your
Mama:, the re-release of "Laura", the popular ballad titled
"Mary, and a track titled "Filthy Gorgeous". All the singles
came from their debut album titled Scissor Sisters.
Their music is obviously influenced by Elton John, Supertramp , the Bee
Gees, Duran Duran, , and various other dance, rock, and funk acts.
They are well-known for brawny live performances, and opened for Duran
Duran's 2004 reunion tour. More recently they have received a lot of attention
form VH1 and MTV. In the USA, two of their videos have received much airtime:
"Take Your Mama" and "Laura".
On July 2, 2005, the group did not disappoint at Live 8. Their set included
the previously unheard song "Everybody Wants The Same Thing".
