Vasco Rossi at Live 8
In June 2005, Vasco Rossi was asked to play the Live
8 event in Italy. His name was all the buzz as writers speculated whether
or not Vasco Rossi would actually play the global event.
Vasco Rossi already had a scheduled concert in Ancona and according to
his publicist, the Live 8 details and times have not been forthcoming.
Elsewhere, Italian newspapers and international newswires reported that
Geldof is chastising the Italian megastar Vasco Rossi for pulling out
of the Rome Live 8 event.
"Where's Vasco? Vasco, where are you? We want Vasco. We need Vasco,"
Geldof said to spontaneous applause from Italian reporters.
"Vasco is a great star, a really great, great artist, and I think
he should be on that stage. He won't lose his voice; he's only got to
sing a couple of songs," Geldof said as he pointed out that Elton
John, Coldplay, U2, Green Day and REM all have concerts on the same day.
In a bold move his biography and picture was included in the official
Live 8 concert guide. Unfortunately, Vasco Rossi decided not to play the
event.
Often painted as the bad boy of Italian rock, Vasco Rossi got involved
in music while working as a DJ for a local radio station called Punto.
His lifestyle - sensationalized by some, condemned by others, but fascinating
by all - has been well documented in Italy. Wild parties, fast living,
a charge for illegal drug possession, Vasco Rossi is for some the archetypal
rock star.
In 1978, he recorded "Ma Cosa Vuoi Che Sia Una Canzone," followed
by 1979's "Non Siamo Mica Gli Americani."
It was 1980's "Colpa d'Alfredo" which fused him in the Italian
rock scene. It was from that moment that Vasco Rossi base of followers
began to grow.
In 1982, Vasco Rossi participated in San Remo's Festival with "Vado
Al Massimo." Although the song came in last place, it became his
first smash hit.
In April of 1984, Vasco Rossi was all over the news in Italy. This time
after being arrested for illegal drug possession.
The more defiant, rebellious and more popular, Vasco Rossi entered the
1990s stereotyped as a rock icon.
In 1998, EMI released Vasco Rossi's album Canzoni Per Me.
